TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your journey for entry into South Africa and Zimbabwe. In addition to a valid passport, and as noted in your Journey Confirmation e-document you received confirming your reservation, a visa is required for entry to Zimbabwe. The country of South Africa does not require a visa for U.S. citizens. Recent new rules at South Africa airports also require that anyone traveling to South Africa must have two consecutive blank pages in their passport which lie side by side when the passport is open (i.e. a left and a right hand page).

Travelers also need a third page blank labelled “visa” the top in order to enter Zimbabwe.  (This third blank page need not be consecutive with the blank two-page spread noted above that is required for entry into South Africa.) U.S. citizens who need to add extra pages to their passport should go to the State Department website for further information.  You will find instructions on how to add extra pages to your passport. Passengers traveling to South Africa with passports that do not comply with these requirements will either be stopped from boarding the aircraft or risk deportation on arrival in South Africa.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of each of the countries visited on this itinerary to determine what travel documentation is required. We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen. To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you  successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Packing Tips

1. Pack light. We take care of your luggage from the second you check in, but you still have to unpack and pack for specific options with the wheelie bag we provide. Packing light ensures that you’ll spend less time managing gear and clothes—and more time relaxing and having fun. 
2. Choose your footwear carefully. Comfortable feet are happy feet. And happy feet keep youhappy over cobblestone streets, rocky mountain paths and steep ancient temple stairs. It may be tempting to bring several pairs of heels, but leave those at home. Our expedition staff recommends taking at least two pairs of good walking shoes, sneakers or hiking boots, for daytime, and a separate pair of casual dress shoes, ballet flats or sandals for night. And never bring a new pair and put them on for the first time on a trip—always break them in beforehand.
3. Oh, and bring plenty of nice, thick, comfy socks.
4. You should also add face wash or soap, sunscreen, moisturizer, aspirin oribuprofen, Band-Aids, large Ziploc bags (for wet and dirty clothes) and extra batteries (if you use them). Always remember to bring extra contact lenses, eyeglasses and sunglasses. If you aren’t married to a particular brand of shampoo, conditioner or lotion, you may want to save some space in your toiletry kit—just pack the bare necessities to get you through a day or two. Most hotels on our itineraries are great about providing these staples.  Bring an original medical script with, and make at least two copies, that your store in different places.
5. Did we mention pack light? And don’t forget a nice, wide-brimmed hatfor sun protection.
6. Use the laundry services. Most hotels have superb laundry services along the way.
7. Keep in mind that you will also have theopportunity to shop in many locales, and you will want to wear your latest finery to dinner. It’s fun and a great way to immerse yourself in the culture. So keep your basic staples light and leave lots of space in your suitcase for your finds.
8. Leave expensive jewellery at home.The opportunities to buy amazing, one-of-a-kind pieces from local artisans and craftspeople on the road will definitely meet your needs. Nothing is more festive than coming to dinner sporting the earrings or that necklace you just found at the street market.
9. Bring a swimsuit and some light workout wear. Many properties feature incredible pools and gyms, as well as yoga classes. A casual swim or stretch is just the ticket to staying limber and energized on the road.
10. Keep in mind that certain activities require different kinds of clothes. And have fun!
